Ingredients
Cake:
1 stick (1/2 cup) butter or margarine
1/2 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
5 eggs, separated to yolks & whites
1 tsp baking soda
2 cups flour
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup chopped nuts
1 cup coconut
Frosting:
1 ounce cream cheese
1/2 cup margarine or shortening
1 pound powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
chopped nuts
chopped coconut
Preparation
Beat egg whites (in a very clean bowl) until they form peaks. Cream butter, shortening, sugar, and vanilla. Add the egg yolks. Mix baking soda with the flour. And the flour and buttermilk to the creamed butter mixture - adding each alternately beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Stir after each addition. Stir in the nuts and coconut. Fold the egg whites into the mixture. Bake in 3 nine inch round pans at 350 about 20 minutes or until done (test with a toothpick).
Frosting: Cream all ingredients together.
