Ingredients
1/4 cup sugar
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
4 cups flour
6 tbsp cold butter
1 cup golden or dark seedless raisins
1-1/2 cups buttermilk
1/2 tsp flour
Preparation
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
In a large bowl, combine the first 5 ingredients with a pastry blender or two knives (or in a food processor)
Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs
with a spoon, stir in raisins and buttermilk, just until evenly moistened
With floured hand, shape dough into a ball, kneading a little.
do not overmix or bread will be tough
Place dough on a cookie sheet, shape into a round loaf. Dough will not be smooth.
Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 tsp of flour over the dough. With a sharp knife, cut a 4 inch cross, 1/4 inch deep into the top of the loaf.
Bake loaf for 1 hour, or until a tooth-pic comes out clean,
